cactus monday! (day3)

I took the weekend off from drawing in here. I did a little here.
The light was weird when I shot these, but I just wanted to keep up. May reshoot on a good light day. 
























I had fun with these guys. I did them while I talked to my sister on the phone. These prickly pears live in my front yard.

I definitely want to play with doing black and white lines in one image tomorrow.

So far it seems like Mark and I agree on the drawings that are stronger and more interesting than others. It's definitely easier for me to learn from someone whose opinions I find valid. Yeah, I said it.  I didn't really know what I was getting into, since I'm working 1-on-1 with him, but have never talked to him in my life. I knew he would have good things to share with me after finding his blog and viewing his sketchbooks on there. But now that we've exchanged a few words, I'm very excited. Mark actually reminds me a little of my most impacting art teacher in undergrad, Patrick Moser. I bet they would be friends if they knew each other. I had Patrick for figure drawing and he changed the way I see the world. He taught me how to look. He then advised me through 2 semesters of figure painting, one as an independent study and one in preparation for my senior exhibition.  I'll be curious to follow up on this connection in my mind after Mark and I work together for a while.

yeah, it's looking like the landfill will be the new home of my scanner.

first day of drawing

I have to admit this project is daunting but I did actually leave the house and draw. I did eventually rack up 2 hours worth. I admit, i didn't count the pages. I tried working at the coffee shop but it was so crowded that I was way too self-conscious about it. So I went and sat outside the local market and drew there. I drew the tables and chairs, the plants for sale, a cityscape.

I have two main issues, being self conscious, lack of refinement. The character of the subject gets lost in my attempt to render. At this point I think I just need to keep looking. I definitely think drawing is a skill easily lost when not put to use. I have not drawn all summer so I'm trying to get past what the drawing look like at this point and just keep making them so that simultaneously the quality will enhance and my confidence will grow. I haven't attempted to use my scanner in years, but I'll give that a shot today. It's a win/win. If it works I'll use it. If it doesn't I can throw it away.
